Wander the World Through Coffee: Welcome to the Nomad Detroit Coffee Blog
There's a moment right after you grind a fresh bag of beans when the smell fills your kitchen and the rest of the morning just clicks into place. That moment is the whole reason Nomad Detroit Coffee exists. And this blog? It's our way of pulling up a chair and inviting you into the story behind every bag.
How Two Friends and a Whirly Pop Started All of This
Nomad Detroit Coffee didn't begin with a business plan. It began with bike rides.
Growing up in St. Clair Shores, Michigan, co-founders Sean and Marcel spent their weekends riding to the local Caribou Coffee, turning a simple coffee run into a ritual that stuck with them well into adulthood. They kept collaborating on projects together through their twenties, but the coffee thing? That was always simmering in the background.
The real spark came when Sean roasted his first batch of beans in an oven for a work project and realized he was hooked. He pulled Marcel in, and the two of them started experimenting with an automated Whirly Pop on a kitchen counter. That setup grew into a consumer roaster, and eventually into the commercial fluid air-bed roaster they use today.
To this day, both Sean and Marcel still work full-time in education and IT. Every bag of Nomad Detroit Coffee is roasted in their off-hours, out of Hunt Street Station in Detroit, powered by the same stubborn love for good coffee that started the whole thing.
What's in the Bag
We keep our lineup focused. Every coffee we offer is single-origin (with one signature exception), roasted in small batches, and sold as whole bean so you get the freshest possible cup at home.
Here's what's on the shelf right now:
Guatemala is our bestseller for a reason. Sourced from Baja Verapaz, it's a light-medium roast with rich macadamia nut sweetness and a clean, cookie-like finish. If you're new to Nomad, this is a great place to start.
Ethiopia comes from the Wush Wush region and tastes like nothing else in the lineup. Vibrant blueberry sweetness, bright lemon citrus, and a quality that reminds people of fresh-baked pound cake. Natural processing gives it a fruitiness that's hard to put down.
Nicaragua hails from Matagalpa, and it's the warm, comforting one. Brown sugar sweetness, cherry brightness, nutty undertones. Washed for clarity and balance.
The Vagabond Blend is our signature. Ethiopian and Nicaraguan beans combined into a medium roast with juicy blueberry, zesty citrus, and a smooth almond finish. It's named for the spirit of the brand: wandering the world through your cup.
Decaf proves that skipping caffeine doesn't mean skipping flavor. Colombian beans from Valle de Cauca, with clove spice, sweet cherry, and rich honeycomb notes.
Why "Nomad"?
Because coffee is, by nature, a global thing. The beans in your morning cup traveled thousands of miles from farms in Ethiopia, Guatemala, Nicaragua, and Colombia before they landed in our roaster in Michigan. Every origin has a story, a climate, a tradition of cultivation that shapes what ends up in your mug.
"Wander the world through coffee" isn't just a tagline. It's the idea that a $22 bag of beans can transport you somewhere new every morning, without leaving your kitchen.
What to Expect From This Blog
We're going to use this space to share the things we wish more people knew about coffee. That includes origin deep dives, brewing tips for getting the most out of your bag, behind-the-scenes looks at our roasting process, and updates on where you can find us in person (hint: the Royal Oak Farmers Market on Saturdays, 7 AM to 1 PM).
We'll also get into the nerdy stuff when the moment calls for it, because we genuinely believe that understanding where your coffee comes from and how to brew it well makes the whole experience better.
Come Say Hi
If you're local, come find us at the Royal Oak Farmers Market. We're there every Saturday morning and always happy to talk beans, brewing, or whatever else is on your mind. If you're not local, our whole lineup ships right to your door at detroit.coffee.
Either way, welcome. We're glad you're here.
